Journaling - We talked about buying a house off and on for years before we actually took the plunge into home ownership. We'd been living in our latest apartment since 2008 when we started looking at homes. A friend recommended a realtor who was willing to guide us newbies and answer all of our crazy questions. We were also honest that we didn't want to make the mistake of buying just to buy. We wanted to find something that worked the best for us.

We looked off and on for a few months and then our cat Dixie was diagnosed with a heart issue and we decided to stop looking and enjoy her last few months at our apartment because moving always stressed her out. It sounds silly to put things on hold for a cat, but we did and, in hindsight it was the best choice for us.
If we had moved while Dixie was alive, we might have saw our relocation as part of the reason she died or feel guilty that we dragged her to a new home again. When we moved into our last apartment, she hid in the master bathroom and closet from the time we let her out of her box until the next day.

Once she was gone and we had grieved, we were ready to start the search again. It would be another YEAR before we found our house. We lost out on three other bids, but it was for the best. The house our realtor found is perfect for us. It wasn't our favorite house. It wasn't updated at all either. But we both thought it was the best choice for us and our budget. The layout is all on one floor with plenty of room for us to grow into. There are a few quirks … the heater/air conditioning unit isn't big enough for the house, the side yard becomes the perfect jumping puddle with any rain, the squirrels use our patio cover for a highway to our fruit trees. It needs work to update the inside. We lost interest and time after Ben was born.

We'd like new windows, doors and to add wall insulation. New kitchen would be great so people don't come in and drop their bags on the stove. We still have beige walls in the kitchen, office, master and hallway.

We made choices to switch the wood fireplace to gas and updated all the switches, plugs and lighting. Looking back, this house was the perfect place for us to settle in and grow with first a new cat and then a baby. Hindsight is 20/20 and, now, we can say that we made the best choice for us and we're happy we're here.

I'm so sorry about your cat, (I would have felt the same way that the stress of the move would have made me guilty). I hope you get all your wishlist projects crossed off on your house!!
