MOC14-friends-journaling

Yesterday as I was merging onto I95, I had some grateful thoughts. Thanks to Heather, who is one of the few people I’ve ever been close friends with for over a decade, and her love of planning and visiting a variety of distant places, I’m still periodically driving far away. I love my 4 mile work commute, but it does mean that it’s possible to pass weeks without getting on the freeway. Of course, it’s not the freeway itself that’s the best part. It’s just that whenever I use it for the last few years, with all the construction of the express lanes, it looks different and it strikes me how unfamiliar it has become. The best part of Heather enjoying planning our hikes and walks is that I’ve probably learned about and visited many more places in the last 12 years than I otherwise would have. I love adventure, but I do have some homebody genes from my parents. If Heather hadn’t suggested we continue walking regularly together I might have become a walker anyway -- I was already struggling to establish a walking habit before she sought a training partner -- but probably I’d mostly only walk locally. Thanks to Heather, I have learned about wonderful places like where we met yesterday, Mason Neck State Park, and others, such as Sky Meadows, Widewater State Park, Belle Isle and the long trails along the James River, Colonial Beach at sunrise, and old town Alexandria. I wonder if I even would have figured out the joy of urban hikes if not for Heather. Thanks!
