Rural living in the Land of 10,000 Lakes is really all it’s cracked up to be. We live in a town of just over 400 people, where our kids can run and play outside with their friends from sun up to sun down with little to no care in the world! I grew up in this quaint town where everyone knows everyone and its like one ginormous family. We are most known for our Economic Development Committee’s attempt to find jobs for women in our town in 1994 that turned into “Bachelormania”. This attempt to find ways to draw women to the town resulted in a worldwide campaign that brought women from every nook and cranny to meet the 78 bachelors that lived in town. It all happened before The Bachelor was a prime time TV show….but in all seriousness, there were BUS LOADS of women that arrived in 1994 for the Grant County Fair in an attempt to find the man of their dreams. I was 13 years old at the time and I’ve NEVER seen anything like it. Women everywhere, men everywhere walking around with roses to give to the woman that catches their eye. Still to this day I get asked if I married one of those bachelors. HAHA. The town has returned to its family like atmosphere, the bus loads of women have gone and we continue to enjoy our little farming community. We did end up with a movie made our attempts to find jobs for women in our town. While its not 100% accurate and also wasn’t filmed in Herman, if you want a hint of what “Bachelormania” was like, look up Herman, USA.
