My Dad was born in Colorado. His father was born in England and his mother was born in Sweden. When he was five years old his mother passed away and he was raised mostly by his sisters who were much older than him. He was a good student especially in math. The trumpet was his favorite instrument and he played it in high school and church. He took wood working classes and was an amazing woodworker making furniture for us.
At the age of twenty-one he married my Mom. They had three children - my two brothers and me. Daddy and grandpa built our house from a plan ordered out of Better Homes and Gardens magazine. It had 5 bedrooms, 5 baths, laundry room, kitchen, dining and living room. It also had a basement which they dug out themselves. My grandparents also lived there with us. After living there for five years my Dad purchased a Redwood patio furniture business and so we moved. The new house was small and he rebuilt the kitchen and added rooms to it. The patio furniture business was successful but after 12 years he was ready to go back to working for a furniture manufacturing company. He sold the business and went back to work.
My Dad was always so much fun. We went on vacation usually once a year. Sometimes we were camping and sometimes staying in motels. He loved to explore and if we passed something interesting he would turn the car around and go back so we could check it out. We took lots of Sunday afternoon drives. I remember riding in the back of the pickup truck (it was legal then!) and sometimes my Mom would drive and my Dad would ride in the back with us and make up silly songs to sing.
Sadly he had an inherited kidney disease and passed away at the age of 53. I still miss him even though it has been 52 years. I was definitely blessed to call him my Dad!
