I show Nolan some old Christmas cookie decorating photos from 2014 and 2015. I asked him some questions to see what he remembered and what he thought. This is how it went. He was not really keen on looking at the old photos, because, you know, playing. But I was, and I could not get over “how baby” he was. Just a baby!! So cute! And little!
Me: Do you remember this?
Nolan: What are we doing? When was that? I don’t remember?? Making gingerbread? What that this year?
Me: Does that look like this year? Look how small you were, just a baby!
Nolan: No? Last year? What are you writing? We’re decorating cookies?
Me: No, in 2015.
Nolan: What? All the way back then? Oh.
Me: You were so small, do you like your decorating?
Nolan: No because I was so little.
Me: Let’s look at the pictures, oh look, you’re eating the icing.
Nolan: What? I am? They look ok. Cool. I only like the one with yellow, red and white.
Me: Do you like our cookie decorating tradition?
Nolan: Yah, why wouldn’t I.
Me: Oh look, your first time decorating (showing him pictures from 2014) a gingerbread house.
Nolan: I’m playing right now! (Reluctantly comes over). Ohhhhhh, how many did we make?
Me: We made 5, each of us made one. Do you remember this?
Nolan: No. Which one is mine? This one?
Me: You and Papa made this one, what do you think?
Nolan: Really good! I want to do that again one day.
We do it every year, it’s a tradition I love. A lot of work, but always fun and tasty!
