Journaling says:
I grew up during the 1950's, in a small town located in the borough of Queens, New York. The name of the town was Far Rockaway. It was so named because it was located at the very end of a long, long, strip of beach called "The Rockaways". During the early to middle part of the Twentieth Century, Far Rockaway was well known in parts of New York City as "the" place to spend the summer. Located within walking distance of a beautiful, pristine beach, Far Rockaway also contained a small business area consisting of locally owned stores, a handful of restaurants and three (!) movie theaters, the RKO Strand, the RKO Columbia, and the GEM theater.
Those movie theaters were a big part of my childhood. Back then, the theaters would have special showings for the holidays and also some weekends, consisting of several hours of cartoons, chapters of adventure and/or comedy serials, and a main feature geared toward kids. These specials sometimes lasted for four hours and the cost of a ticket was only 25 cents! Of course back then 25 cents went a lot further than it does now but still, what a bargain!
The RKO Strand was an old vaudville theater and it was huge! It contained 2,000 seats and a balcony. The ceiling and walls were decorated with paintings and some were gilded, it was beautiful. I spent many happy hours at the Strand lost in the splendor of the building and the fantasy of the movies...add in a bag of popcorn for 10 cents and a coke for 5 cents and I was in heaven. It was great for my working Mom too because she knew that once she saw me walk through those theater doors she had several hours of alone time, a huge luxury for working mothers then and now.
