Over the past two and a half years of house renovation, I’ve often been asked if we’ve done this before or if we want to do it again. The real question, is “Would you have purchased this fixer-upper again knowing what you know now.” Hindsight is 20/20. I can easily say, “no.” Even though we are happy with the final product, we had no idea what it would take in terms of money, time, and stress.
Since we moved into this house, we have lived out of boxes, moved furniture and boxes around multiple times, and put up with dust, noise and cold. We’ve lived through nonworking toilets, grungy showers, gross kitchen counters, and floors that I wouldn’t trust to bare feet. I’ve had a toilet on my porch, a bathtub in my entryway and bathroom vanities in my office. My refrigerator has been in my dining room, and a bookshelf held our food. My office was often crammed in among boxes and unused furniture. My master bedroom window broke out in a windstorm.
It has been an exhausting string of projects. Every inch of the house needed repair and paint. There were so many projects that we didn’t have time for fun or money for vacations. Peace and sanity were in limited supply. I am so happy that it is nearly over!
