The text (just over 270 words per counter):
Just months before I was born, the Berlin wall began. I don't remember anything about it until I was in the fifth grade. I missed a filmstrip due to illness and Mrs. ?Pilkington (that's the name that pops into my head anyway) let me go over in a corner of the room and watch it. The current topic was World War II. There were at least 6 filmstrips in the case. I watched the one the class had enjoyed, peeked around at the teacher. She was caught up in class (or at least I thought she was). So, I popped a second filmstrip into the personal viewer (complete with headphones) and enjoyed myself another strip. It was very interesting.
Checked on teacher again. She still seemed busy. Strip three went into the machine and I was overfull of both adventure, guilt and joy. I managed to watch all the strips. I do remember at one point, she winked at me so she knew what I was up to and was okay with it.
My next real memory of the wall was from books I read, biographies, about the Cold War and spies and residents trying to escape East Berlin. That would have begun around age ?16. I was really into spy books from college through the 80s. I was most likely asleep when the wall began falling. I was working nightshift at @@@@@@@@ *******, 12 hours at a whack and every shift I could pick up at other hospitals.
I do have a distinct memory of watching Headline (or CNN) News channel replay the first bits falling, joyous people and all. Never did carry through with my desire to buy a chunk of the wall in a piece of jewelry, or keep reading spy novels. Wonder if they were connected?
Loved reading your journaling - great storytelling! And love seeing the different photos, including the overhead view of the wall. Great page design! Thanks for playing along with my challenge!
