Journaling:

Kevin grew up in Texas and graduated from Texas Tech in 2009 with a degree in Theatre and a minor in teaching. He moved to Oxford Ohio to attend Miami University to get a Masters Degree in theatre. He had chosen Miami University because there was a playwriting professor that he wanted to study under.

Amy grew up in North Carolina and graduated from Catawba College in 2007 with a degree in musical theatre. She decided to take some time off from college before going to grad school. She worked at the Biltmore in Asheville for a couple years and then decided that it was time to go back to school. She also decided to attend Miami University for a Masters degree in Theatre.

The Theatre department was a small department with less than ten students. These students became very close and usually went to a bar on Friday nights together to unwind.

Kevin and Amy liked these nights out because they were together but also with other students and they didn’t know how the other person felt about them. One evening everyone else was busy so it was only Kevin and Amy at the bar. They realized that they did like each other and enjoyed getting to know each other even more.

They started dating but decided to not tell anyone in the department. (They regret that now.) Amy was the “darling” of the department and Kevin was NOT! She didn’t want her advisor to ask why she was dating the “black sheep” of the department. She is a better student than Kevin and he does things his own way. Fortunately, his advisor liked the way he did things. So they dated for the two years that they were in grad school.

The summer between the two years, they went with other students for a semester abroad in Prague, Czech Republic. They couldn’t really be seen as dating but they did get away one weekend to take the train to Poland and do some sight seeing there.

With graduation approaching, the students talked about what they would do next. Amy was applying to Ph.D programs and Kevin decided he was tired of school and he would go to work. Amy applied to many programs and got accepted to her top choice at the University of Texas in Austin. Kevin decided to move to Austin too and the other students figured that he was moving to Austin to move back to Texas. He was actually moving to Austin so that he and Amy could move in together.

In May 2011, they moved into a small apartment that they could afford. Kevin took a job as a substitute teacher. Amy started studying for her Ph.D. Kevin learned quickly that teaching was not going to be his career. He did not like school growing up because he thought there was wasted time. He didn’t like it so much that he was homeschooled from grade 6 through 12. So it wasn’t surprising that he didn’t like teaching in public schools. He then went to work at the Apple store and stayed there for a few years. While he was there he taught classes and learned that he did like teaching, just not K-12 teaching. After those years, he applied at Indeed and worked as an internal trainer for their employees. He was at Indeed for a few years but was laid off during a layoff time.

Amy received her Ph.D in May of 2017 but also was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia at the same time. Her hopes of becoming a professor went down the drain because she couldn’t tell which days would be good days and which would be bad days. She was depressed and really didn’t know what to do for a career. I remember that her mom sent me a birthday card a couple months later and told me that she was proud of me for raising a man! She said that some men would have left Amy when she became sick. Kevin was in love and wouldn’t leave Amy! They are life partners.

Kevin spent the last half of 2019 looking for a job. I am not sure how they managed during that time. I know that their life was stressful and they were still living in their small one bedroom apartment. He was hired in December to join the training department at a mortgage company starting in January. In March 2020, the pandemic sent everyone home to work. So Kevin began doing online training for the employees of the mortgage company. Amy decided to become a freelance editor. She edits dissertations, books, etc. She is very meticulous and is an excellent editor. She also wrote for the Bearded Lady Project and was published in their book. So for ten years they lived in that little Austin apartment and still loved each other and enjoyed each other’s company.

Amy and Kevin finally came to visit us in May 2021. Kevin was still working at home and Amy was still editing. They told us that they had lived in Austin long enough and wanted to move to North Carolina. Her parents live in “The Woods” up in the mountains outside of Asheville on 8.5 acres. They wanted to move there and build a house. Kevin asked his supervisor if he could continue working from home in North Carolina and got permission to do that. So in the summer of 2021, they moved to the upstairs portion of her parents’ house in The Woods. They love it there! They haven’t built a house yet, but there are plans to build on the acreage.

They didn’t get married in Texas because they never saw a reason to get married. They are definitely life partners and didn’t feel the need to be married. However, Texas recognizes common-law marriages (which they were), but North Carolina does not. In order to be able to file joint taxes, etc, they would actually have to be married.

Her parents, his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, and Kevin and Amy vacationed in May at Sunset Beach NC. Kevin’s sister is an ordained Lutheran pastor. On Tuesday, they drove into town to get a marriage license. On Thursday, the eight of us walked to the beach one evening (with a photographer) and his sister married them. They still consider their anniversary to be in November when they started dating in 2009. This was considered just a legal thing to them but we certainly had fun at the “wedding”. We even had a wedding cake back at the beach house after the wedding.

They are an awesome loving couple and I love both of them! They will have their 14th anniversary in a few months.
