Journaling:
This is the heart of our little town. And growing up, this is the place that I was so determined to leave. I had big plans – a fast-paced career in a big city, the single life (although I always wanted to be a mother, and planned on a kid, one way or the other). Mt. Sterling was too small, too provincial, and too full of people who knew me altogether too well. If you’d asked a teenage Elizabeth for the odds that she’d end up living right where she grew up, she’d have laughed at you. But, meeting JEB changed everything. He loved Kentucky – and the more I saw the state through his eyes, the more I did, too. He had no intention of moving away. And, he loved Mt. Sterling (Court Day, especially). Everything I wanted changed – almost overnight. I wanted a home. I wanted roots. I wanted family – one of my own, and to be around the one I inherited. After a few newlywed years in Lexington, we did exactly what I swore I never would: we moved to Mt. Sterling. I’ll never regret it. Because we live here, my children’s best friends are their cousins. They are surrounded by grandparents and aunts and uncles. Sunday night dinner with extended family is a standing date. Mt. Sterling is still small. It still sometimes feels provincial (a Starbucks would be nice). But this is right where we belong. Hindsight is 20/20.
