Journaling: It was late summer when my husband and I arrived in Little Rock Arkansas on a driving vacation through several southern states and decided to stop at the (impressive) neoclassical state capitol building. The structure is beautiful and I remember especially the simple elegance of the center dome of the rotunda. During the self-guided tour, we learned that construction began in 1899 and was completed in 1915 using mainly prisoner labor. As a scale replica of the US capitol, this building and the grounds frequently are used as a filming location. On one wall of the rotunda, there is a stained glass interpretation of the Arkansas State seal.
As we were looking around, a young man approached us, introduced himself and asked if we would be interested in meeting the Governor. We said we weren’t residents of Arkansas, just visiting the state from California. He assured us that didn’t make any difference and the Governor just enjoyed meeting visitors to the capitol. Surprised and honored we met the governor in his office and spent a few minutes talking about our trip and our impressions of Arkansas. I remember thinking he looked very young and was quite handsome with a charming manner and Southern accent.
A few years later, a young man from a “Place called Hope” became President of the United States. It was then that we realized the friendly Governor of Arkansas who “enjoyed meeting visitors” was Bill Clinton. We’ve often wondered if he was planning a run for the presidency even then and knew his personal approach would bode well for someone with national political ambitions.
