May 17th is our national day, Constitution Day. We celebrate from early morning till late evening. A lot of school kids start the day in the children's parade, walking to "Helsetunet", so that those who are unable to leave the center, will have the opportunity to take a little part in the celebrations where they are. Around noon, children from all schools in the area, gather for the main children's parade in the community. They start by the church, walk through the city center, just to end up outside Tingberg. Along the streets are crowds of people, waving Norwegian flags, and shouting "Hurray!"
I'm always easily teary-eyed on this day. There is just something about excited children's eyes, and a sea of red, white and blue. After the children's parade, the schools usually organize a lot of games for the children to take part in, and then we meet up with family later. The most important part of the day: there's lots of ice cream to be had.
Norway's constitution was signed in Eidsvoll in 1814, and one of the Eidsvoll men was my great-great- great-great-grandfather on my mother's side, Helmer Gjedebo. He was very shy, and that is why there are no pictures of him, like there is of all the other Eidsvoll men.
Loved reading your journaling - great storytelling. How cool is that about your great-great-great-great-grandfather! Love seeing the photos. Wonderful page! Thanks for playing along with my challenge!
I love the addition of journaling to either side of the template, the focus on your national colours and the mix of information about the day, constitutional history and family history in the journaling.
