It just so happened that we didn't - still don't - have our song, so when rehearsing our first dance for the wedding we thought we'd go with a suggestion from our dance coordinator. Because my then boyfriend had actually agreed to take dancing lessons, I was happy to let him choose the song he liked.
We had settled on a waltz and he really loved the sound of Hijo de la Luna. I was rather sceptical - having spent three years in Mexico I speak Spanish really well - and translated the song for him.
He shrugged and said that what really mattered there was the sound of the music because nobody from the guests could speak Spanish or would even know the song... and we were made of sterner stuff than to believe our future could be influenced by a song. I nodded ... and that was it...
The lyrics retell an old Romani legend of a woman who beggs the moon to marry the love of her life. The moon grants her wish, but in return asks for her first-born child. When the baby is born and is totally albino white and looks different from both parents who are dark-skinned, the husband accuses his wife of adultery and stabs her to death. He then takes the baby to the top of the mountain where he abandons her and the Moon adopts the child, thus fulfilling its wish of becoming a mother.
That really is a gruesome love story, like you say! But I love the story you're telling here about how your husband said you were made of sterner stuff. It's really beautifully told.
I love that your hubby said they won’t understand the lyrics anyway, lol. Fantastic layering in the background of this. The little tag with the translation is a great touch. Thanks for playing along with my challenge
