Paul Kelly - Who's gonna make the Gravy?
Who's gonna make the gravy? by Paul Kelly was written in 1996. Paul Kelly is an Australian folk artist, Australia's most prodigious singer-songwriter, who is very well loved by all walks of life. In Australia on the 21st of December we wish people "Happy Gravy Day" and often debate whether the tomato sauce should go in or not lol. There's also a debate on who is going to make the gravy instead of Joe? Is it Dan? We think it's Dan because Joe is telling him the recipe.
Aussie's will argue black & blue that it is a Christmas song and it gets put on every Djs playlist during the festive season. What I love about it is that it's actually a sad song, A song that reminds you that not everyone is making it home for Christmas, whatever the reason. During the pandemic the song has taken on a new meaning for families and friends separated by border closures. It resonated with Australians so much that they were making videos of themselves and sending them to their loved ones. In 2021 Paul made a montage video clip for the song out of them.
Since 2019 it has had even more meaning to me as my brother has been in jail. Now when it plays I think of him and cry because I miss him.
Pete & I love this song. Whatever time of year we hear it we turn it up. We have matching 'gravy' t-shirts that we wear to Christmas parties, always on December 21st and to Paul Kelly concerts.Mine says Who's gonna make the gravy? Pete's is a little sneaky. On the front it says Hello Dan, it's Joe here and on the back it says I hope you're keeping well. People stop and comment on it.
It's a very special song that has made itself part of our culture.
I enjoyed learning about a new-to-me song so thanks for sharing Kate! I love your big bold “Gravy Day” title and the photo of your matching “gravy” shirts. I also love the tan background with all the reds and greens on top.
Thanks so much for sharing the lyrics to this sing and your special meaning of it for you. I am going to google it to see if I can have a listen as well. Love that photo of you both and your title and subtitle alpha choices. Thanks for participating with my challenge.
