Journaling:
When my youngest was a Senior in high school, I decided that I should probably return to work. I hadn’t worked professionally for 14 years and I wasn’t sure about going back to work full-time. I was already working part-time as a high school math tutor and I enjoyed that. I decided to take some classes at the local community college to freshen up my skills. Many years ago, I was a computer programmer but I didn’t want anything that stressful. I enrolled in the Office Careers Program and took a few classes.
While I was taking these classes, I thought to myself, I could teach these classes. The teacher worked part time in a computer lab, helping students learn Microsoft Office, Keyboarding, Windows, etc. After a few weeks, the instructor called me at home and told me that there was an opening for another instructor and she wanted to recommend me. I hadn’t even told her that I was thinking it would be the perfect job for me! So I applied and was hired. I became an OCP Instructor in 2009.
Now it is 2023 and I am still here. I don’t tutor anymore because I wanted my evenings to be free again. My husband just retired from his full-time job and got a part-time “fun” job. Since this is also a part-time job, it is perfect for now.
My husband and I both turn 65 this year and we want to do some traveling in the next few years. We have two two-week cruises this Spring. When I told my boss, he was fine with it. I am the most experienced teacher in the program and I don’t think he wants me to leave! I like the job and it gives me something to do but I am wondering when I will quit the job entirely. Just pondering about it right now. I’m also pondering what would I be doing if I wasn’t working mornings at the college? What will I do next?
