Van Gogh-Self Portrait
12/19/21 we went to the Columbus Museum of Art to see this exhibition of paintings by Van Gogh and other painters whom he admired. This is just a small number of the paintings I particularly liked.
Vincent Van Gogh-1887
Bridge across the Seine at Asnieres
“While painting at Asnieres, I saw more colors than I have ever seen before.”
Jean-Francois Raffaelli-1879
The Return of the Rag Pickers
“I’m so fond of L’hermitte--Raffaelli--because it’s thought out through and through, sensible and honest”
Jean-Francois Raffaelli-1881
The Absinthe Drinkers
“In the salon, there’s a very fine painting by Raffaelli, two absinthe drinkers, I find him strongest when he paints these people, who have come down in the world...”
Constantin Meunier-circa 1860-70
Ophelia (The Suicide)
“A man who is far superior to me, Meunier has painted...things I’ve dreamed of doing, feeling that it hadn’t been done and that it ought to be painted.”
Vincent Van Gogh-1890
Undergrowth with Two Figures
One of his very last paintings, Undergrowth with Two Figures appears to be pessimistic, both literally and figuratively dark, despite the profusion of energetically brushed white, yellow, and pink (now faded) flowers in the foreground. The background glimpsed between the trees above the high horizon line is, in fact, black with touches of blue, and the two figures in the center appear motionless, as if trapped between the purple trees.
