I love these peeks into bird ownership. I've only known one person who had a bird and they never let them out of their cage as far as I know. This is just fascinating that they just fly around and play in your house. Seems so cool!
@Karen they stay in cages when most people visit but then they are often noisy at the injustice of it!
They are a lot of work and given I follow more 'bird people ' than scrappers on Instagram, any vet or respectable bird owner would discourage people from having them as pets without a lot of research b/c of their lifespan & need to be entertained/mentally enriched. There are downsides, but it's much like any dog or cat really- they're destructive (you should see our ceiling cornices, or lack of where they sit on the aircon unit & such - DH has patched some but it feels pointless); we can't have 'toxic' plants inside b/c they don't know the difference & we're fanatical about closing doors when they're out of cages b/c if they make it outside, they'd be lost for sure and easy prey (we found out a family round the corner have an $$$ Amazon parrot when my DD saw them looking in yards up & down our street trying to find him when he got out shuffling stuff around for a reno, they did find him in a tree next door to us after a few days but that was a miracle & I think only b/c he was well trained).
Steve's sort of a special needs bird, his feet are missing claws and have odd joints (? breeding issue) but even though it should make it harder for him, it doesn't stop him climbing. He has custom (normal flat building timber) perches in his cage to sleep on & George in his old age seemed to prefer them so DH had to carve out more to slot into the other cages. Anyhow glad to give you a glimpse into my crazy life
I love this page so much Justine! You captured Steve’s personality perfectly! I love how the one tag is framing Steve in the big photo; brilliant! Thanks for joining MIS!
