MOC #6
Journaling reads:
This is the Blackhawk War Monument located near my childhood home.
It is way off of the beaten path, pretty much in the middle of nowhere in
Stephenson County, Illinois. I hadn't visited it for years, but last year,
while we were on an Autumn "Road Trip" we stopped here. My mind &
heart were instantly flooded with thoughts and memories of days gone by.
During the summer and fall months, my best friend and I would pack a
sack lunch, jump on our bikes, and ride up the big hill and around the
curves to reach the Monument. We spent many lazy afternoons playing
there. Back then, I never noticed that I could see for miles and miles
as I looked to the East. I really had no idea or interest in what the
Monument symbolized. I had no idea that battles had been fought and lives
taken here during the Blackhawk War in in 1832. I am not a history
buff, but have to admit that I am proud to have grown up so close to a
place where history has been made. And I'm thankful for the wonderful
memories that were made back in those fun filled days of my childhood.
