Dear Lois, I know you’re up in Heaven, looking down right now. If you didn’t get up there, there’s no hope for any of us. Mother’s Day was this month and I always think of you and you know I considered you my second mom, and always wished you were my “real” mom, because you were such a great mom to your boys. How you and my mom were ever best friends is and always was a mystery to me. You two were so different and I remember that she was always on your back about one thing or another. She didn’t like your mothering style at all, did she? When she complained about how you let your boys’ grow their hair long, you told her they were just "expressing" themselves. She’d always roll those Betty Davis Eyes at you - man I hated that look of hers. But you were unscathed by her looks and her comments. We spent a lot of time together and I’m sure she came and cleaned your house because she never thought anybody else’s house was clean enough. Certainly not as clean as hers. Knowing you - you probably loved to let mom clean your house. Smart woman that you were. We only lived 2 blocks from you and we seemed to be at your house a lot. You guys always cooked a pot of beans and we had cornbread and fried potatoes. Funny the odd things we remember. I was always a little afraid of your husband, though, truth be told. He was a grump. Later on, I realized that he was just tired from his very difficult job working at a coal company all day. You never let him get you down, either. He’d come home and act all mean and grumpy with you and you’d just chuckle at him and tell him to sit down and you’d go make him a cup of coffee. Your feet always hurt, remember? You hated to wear shoes even in the winter. Guess what, my feet hurt too and I hate to wear shoes, too. I think of you so often when my feet hurt. You always said “oh, my aching feet”. Haha I always thought it was funny just the way you said it. You also used to say things to tick my mom off, but in a funny way. She’d always roll those eyes , “cluck her tongue” and say “Now, Lois Mae!” I think of you every day and love you and miss you very much. Love, Cheryl
