Cork was founded in the sixth century by St. Finbar, and was used as a monastic settlement. Around 915 AD, the Vikings established a trading post here, and even today, Cork families have Norse last names that are not found elsewhere in Ireland. For much of the Middle Ages, Cork city was an outpost of Old English culture in the midst of a predominantly hostile Gaelic countryside and cut off from the English government in Dublin. Neighbouring Gaelic lords extorted "Black Rent" from the citizens to keep them from attacking the city. | When you are far from home, it is pretty neat to see your last name. I learned later that Woodford Bourne & Co. was a grocery shop founded by John Woodford, who died from an illness contracted while he was engaged in charitable work during the Famine. | I’d love to have more time to explore this place - but I remember that the beautiful hotel, Hayfield Manor, had a hilarious doorman, and the fish and chips at the Fish Wife were the perfect first taste of Ireland.
