oh gosh Jen.. another beauty.. Is that a ladder backed woodpecker? I googled as I thought it might be a Downy, but saw the breast was different.. wow.. never saw one like that...... love the monotone black & white elements here with the photo that pops with his red head fantastic page!
@cfile Thank you for your sweet comment, Christa. I know this as a Nuttall's Woodpecker but it certainly looks very similar to the Ladder Backed Woodpecker. I am lucky enough to have a pair of them nesting nearby, and they are both frequent visitors to our hummingbird feeder. (Much to the annoyance of the territorial male hummingbird, who thinks the feeder belongs exclusively to him lol!)
@JenEm ah thank you for the correction... My mother would have been thrilled to see this She was president of our local NY Long Island Audobon Chapter many many moons ago. I was 7 when she took up Bird Watching now that she has been gone many years (33 yrs now) my brother and I always look up the birds to identify.. your Nuthall Woodpecker is so beautiful.
