1985, the year I started fifth grade and went to Gekås in Ullared for the first time. The dress in the photo was bought there—what was I thinking? This was the year The Goonies came out, and we watched it at Filmpalatset in Bromölla. I spent quite a bit of time with Jenny, and we often rented videos from the kiosk at the square where her mom worked. We mostly read Starlet, but I was also really into Bamse and Agent X9. The magazine Okej was exciting, with cool posters you could put up on your wall.

I read a lot—Cherry Ames, Femman, Betongrosorna, and loads of other books I devoured. I also wrote my own stories. I still played with Lego—this might have been the year I got the police station set for my birthday. I also played with dolls and sewed clothes for them. The most fun was playing with the doll I got from Mari-Helen, the one with the broken leg—mostly because it had so many different outfits.

I was really right on the edge between being a child and a teenager, and I was very afraid of not having friends or not fitting in. All those heartfelt ballads fit my mood like a glove.
