Several times a year, I wander down to the boat landing near my home. It sits directly across the river from Harrisburg. I love the cityscape that lays out before me. The small islands are rich with flora and fauna through most of the year. But when winter arrives, and temperatures stay low long enough - these huge blocks of ice form. When they break up, the water current pushes them to the edges of the river. Both on my side, and the city side . . . we see these massive, 6-8 foot tall blocks of ice. Birds will roost on them. We watch people climb onto them for photos - I’ve done this myself. It is awe inspiring to be close to something so massive. I am ever reminded that we can not control nature, but simply learn to exist with it. I’ve documented it many times . . . my most favorite things about Pennsylvania is these pronounced, defined seasons. I need this quarterly reminder of renewal and change. It is so visual here.
