Running into people in odd place is a fixture in my life - sometimes delightful, sometimes not so much. When I joined the Women’s Army Corps in 1973, I flew to Seattle to see my mother before I went to Basic Training. I sat next to a lovely lady all the way from Huntsville, Alabama and we had a fun time. I delayed returning - you could do that for free then - I was delighted to find she was sitting next to me on the way home. We had a long layover in St. Louis and were in the waiting area when I happened to look up and said to her, “See that man with his back to us? Except that he doesn’t have a suit like that, he could be my father.” No sooner were the words uttered than he turned around and “Daddy!” popped out of my mouth. He was returning from California and on my flight! It should have gotten my attention then, but sometimes I need a bonk on the head to make it stick.
I ran into high school friends in the service that I was unaware had also chosen that route. I run into friends on road trips at service areas that I haven’t seen in years. I see my brother on the television sleeping at his desk doing a 24-hour stretch of duty in Iraq. I even ran into friends from New Zealand staying at the same hotel in London - half the world and years later!
I used to wonder why, but I think God was letting me know I was loved and needed. Sometimes, I was feeling low and needed encouragement. Others, those I encountered needed a little TLC. Yet, other times were simply joyful. Always, they were to connect us in a fragmented world, to remind us that God has a plan and we are part of it even when unaware. As I look back, I realize those encounters enriched my life in so many unexpected ways. I don’t travel as much now, so this no longer happens on a regular basis – at least not physically. However, there is seldom a lengthy time between these chance meetings on the Internet, either through scrapbooking, genealogy or Facebook (which hates me!). God always makes a way!
