A few years ago we moved somewhere where the culture is for the kids to get about by themselves. Even the 5 and 6 year olds walk home from school alone quite often. I don't think we'd be comfortable with that, but we have recently started letting the almost-14 year old go down the road to the local library on her own and she is very happy about it!
