The journaling reads:
Celebrating your birthday in the garden is a real dream come true for us. Ten years ago we made the decision to move house. It seemed the logical next step at the time. But when we bought this house it turned our lives upside down in a way we could never have imagined. When your turned five we promised you we would celebrate your birthday in our new home. And we did. Little did we know then about the problems that we were about to face. Soon after we signed the deeds for the new home, the financial crisis started. At first it didn’t seem like much of a problem. Then banks started to fall apart, people lost their jobs and the housing market came to a halt. Selling our old
house turned out to be really difficult. It took us two years and we took a big loss. And to make matters worse I lost my job a couple of weeks later. Repaying our debt was hard, but we made it work. Today we’re eight years later and we have finally paid off our debt. So now it is your 13th birthday and like all the years since your fifth, we celebrate it in the garden of that ‘new’ home.
Is hindsight 20/20? In this case probably not.
Had we known the full extent of the (financial) difficulties that would come
from buying this house... I don’t think we would have taken the risk.
