Fort Denison sits on a sandstone islet and has been a common sight within Sydney Harbour waters for many years. Since the First Fleet sailed into the harbour it has been a prison (1788), a military fortress (1841) and now a museum, tourist attraction, restaurant and popular location for wedding receptions and corporate events.

We used to see it as we sailed past it on our way to Manly Beach, and it always seemed to fill me with sadness, remembering its sad history and the way the convicts were treated. During its prison era this was the spot where they used to take those prisoners that were condemed to be hung. Even on a bright summer day there is still a sombre atmosphere that hangs around it.
