Dear Grandma,
I’d first like to say…I love you and miss you and wish that you had lived longer so that I might have known you when I was an adult. You were my first real loss in life. I was a senior in High School when you passed away. I wish that technology was better in those days. I know if I’d had access to a cell phone or camera that I would have taken so many photos of you. I would have albums full of selfies of you and I. You were game for anything and would have happily posed with me and been goofy and fun! But as it stands, I have only 3 precious photos of you and I and my fleeting memories. So as I write this letter, I will try to convey what memories I have. I remember first and foremost that you liked to dress nicely and get your hair done. If we were going out anywhere, you looked so nice! You would take our family to dinner at Gunthers. I don’t remember for sure, but I think this was a monthly happening. You did not let your blindness stop you from dressing up and going out! I remember you sitting on the couch and we would somehow get you laughing and you would full on laugh and giggle for minutes. Your laugh was contagious and before we knew it, we were all laughing hysterically and had forgotten what got us laughing in the first place. You also always had an arm to go around me when I needed a snuggle, or hug, or a lap ready to lay my weary childhood head. You gave love freely and enjoyed the physical contact of a grandchild in need of some extra love! You were organized, you had to be because you were blind latter in life and you needed to know where everything you had was. I remember your wallet was filled, but you knew exactly what and where everything was. You always had a listening ear and appreciated when we came home from school and told you about our day. I also remember you sleeping a lot. I was in awe that you could fall asleep sitting up and get a good nap in. You liked to listen to things and I believe you had your favorite shows that you listened to on TV. You were a calm and gentle influence in my life. I try to remember that now as I am a grandma and I try to emulate that for my grandkids because it is a memory that stands out and makes me feel relaxed and calm thinking about it. Even though I don’t remember a lot of specific things. I remember feelings and know that you loved me and cherished me and for now, that is enough.
