Deaf at Delta

When I first got a job at Delta no one thought it would be possible. Why on earth would Delta hire someone who is Deaf to be one of their customer service agents? Sure, I can speak and I can hear some with my hearing aids, but it is not easy being the only Deaf employee working for Delta Airlines in our region. There is a lot of ignorance and discrimination that goes on in the work place. I have had a few co-workers ask why I was hired for the job if I cannot hear and even have had a few customers refuse to check in at the desk I was serving being I am Deaf. I have learned to overcome the negativity. I was hired because I am good at my job. I enjoy customer service. Someone believed in me and gave me the chance. I bring diversity to the work place and share a new outlook on life with those around me. Yes, I will get those people who think I cannot do the job because of my disability, but I will also show those same people extreme kindness and teach them that with a little hard work anything is possible. Deaf people can be out in the workforce. They can do anything that hearing folk can, except hear. I may be Deaf, but my deafness does not define me. I am a person too. I am the only one at my station that speaks American Sign Language and one of the few that can truly relate with our customers with special needs. These are positives, not negatives. I am changing the world one tiny piece at a time by showing others that a person is a person and a person with a disability is just that, a person with a disability. There is so much more to see if you only give them a chance.
