......I gave gold for iron..........
Journaling
I gave gold for iron was a slogan that in wartime called to
donate gold and jewelry to finance the war.
In return, the donor received iron jewelry.
For the first time in 1813, Princess Marianne of Prussia
appealed to all women in Prussia to swap their gold ornaments for a brooch or a ring of iron with the inscription
GOLD I WAS FOR IRONS. This request has been
fulfilled many times. Iron jewelry became the fashion
of all patriot women, thus showing their contribution
to the support of the wars of liberation.
The call was repeated during the First World War
My great-grandmother wanted to support her fatherland
and gave away her jewelry in 1916 and got this iron cross
for it. She always wore it.
This action never happened again.
After she passed away, no one thought about the cross until
it was rediscovered by relatives in the 70's and brought to us.
Now it is here in a jewelry box and is a testimony
to the war, but also a part of our family history.
