Journaling:
Perhaps Lancaster is best known for being the hub of Pennsylvania's Amish Country. Thousands of tourists visit here each summer to learn about the Amish Community. They are often surprised to learn that Lancaster is a place of diversity - racially, ethnically, culturally, and economically. This is one of the aspects of this city which I greatly appreciate and enjoy.
Several years ago, a contingent of Lancaster Co. folks traveled to S. Carolina to compete for the title of Tree Capitol USA. They won! This is another reason I like the city that I call home. The leaders work hard to improve conditions for ALL of its citizens - not just those with money. So, they encourage citizens to plant trees, and they do in vacant lots, in parks and parking lots.
There are many other reasons Lancaster is a good city including all of the history still evident in this place which is one of the oldest inland cities in our country.
There is a vibrant art and theater community thriving throughout the county. The jewel piece is the Fulton Opera House, which is one of only three theaters in our nation to be named a National Historic Landmark. The downtown is a busy hub on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays when the Central Market is open. Built in 1889, it is the oldest continuously run farmers’ market in the United States.
The beautiful parks, its three colleges, Gallery Row, the plentiful children’s playgrounds, science centers, thoughtful repurposing of old buildings, Dutch Wonderland and the renowned Sight & Sound Theater, street fairs, etc. make life here interesting and entertaining.
