Hear My Voice Elements by Rachel Jefferies and Lynn Grieveson
Journaling: (187 words)
When life is loud and just won’t stop,
that sense of overwhelm is about to
swallow me whole . . . I always head
outside, to the deepest parts outside.
Where trees create a ceiling and the
leaves hug my body. The dirt pulls
me down and grounds me.
This is where I can breathe more
deeply and quiet all the thoughts
that scream at me. I can begin to
balance my perspective, and I can
hear my voice reassure me.
Since I’ve been a child, the “woods”
have been my go to, when I needed
to rebalance. I can remember as
a small child, running across the
field, crying, as a means of escape
from whatever had overwhelmed me.
I should probably visit the woods
more often. As I age and skies are
dark when I leave work, it is only
the weekend that gives me this
option of retreat.
In the morning, when I wake, I lay
in bed, cuddling the cats and
listening to the birds chirp.
This small piece of “outside
noise” starts most of my days.
And for now, it is enough.
