Living in the village, we never even considered looking around at different primary schools. This place just felt right. Perhaps because it had that small community feeling that I remembered from my own primary school not far away in Belper.
The number of pupils varies between the 75-85 mark. Each year only has a maximum intake of twelve pupils for the Reception class, although there is a small capacity to take newcomers to the area with children moving into other years. For your though, Chiara, there were only five of you. I think that must have been the smallest for the school in history. Classrooms doubled up for years and there were other times that the older years mixed with the younger years which further fostered the family/community feeling.
The teachers were all so lovely too (although you may disagree). Our absolute favourite was Mrs Whysall. She was a warm, caring, nothing is too much trouble type of teacher, with a quiet and calm manner and a gentle style of firmness.
We had some issues (putting it mildly) and Mrs Whysall took time out of her day to offer counselling to you and me, both individually and together. She helped us both to see each other's point of view and guided you in looking for ways to handle your disappointments, frustrations and anger. I can say, hand on heart, that I'm not sure how we would have survived those years without her intervention.
Although you were excited to be moving onto High School for new experiences and to make new friends, it was a bittersweet day when you had to say goodbye to her. I was lucky enough that she stayed around long enough to see Mia through primary school, as she retired the same year that Mia moved to high school herself.
Mrs Whysall follows a huge number of her former pupils on Facebook and never fails to wish each and every one of you a happy birthday and frequently makes comments on other posts from pupils and their parents too.
Although Ambergate School itself was a wonderful place to attend, it's without a doubt Mrs Whysall who we saw as the heart of it.
