My grandmother Elsie graduated from the nursing program at Toronto Western Hospital in 1942. When the war started she signed up to help. On June 6, 1944 (D-Day) she was halfway across the Atlantic on the Queen Mary. I don't know for sure where all she was in the U.K. but she did mention Bramshott and Aldershot. Next she was sent to Holland in the Netherlands. In 1946 she was in Germany, when they closed the unit hospital and had a wrap-up party before they were sent back to Canada. She continued to keep in touch with many other of the nursing sisters until her death. She was known just as Murph to them. She was able to take a few leaves during that time. She brought souvenirs home from Scotland, Ireland and Holland and prominently displayed them in her home. She didn't talk much of her time there to anyone other than in her Christmas cards to her fellow nurses.
