Somehow, on the way back, we ended up talking about spices and how even back in the 16th century exotic spices like black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla were available in rural Europe. And how when allspice was introduced in 1600s - people called it 'the new spice' because - apaprently - all the other spices had already been known. In Czechia, allspice is called "the new spice" to this day.
