The journaling reads:

"Happy Valentine's Day!" she said in a happy voice adjusting the camera so I could see her better. "Did you get flowers from your husband this morning?"

I smiled... and explained that because my husband and I lived together he hadn't given me any flowers in the morning... before going to work. She shrugged carelessly and nodded sagely... the way only a fourteen-year-old can. We opened the Google Slides presentation and started on the differences between masculine, feminine and neutral endings for nouns and adjectives. She was sitting there, biting her bottom lip and shaking her head slightly, trying to work out the grammatical intricacies of a foreign language, and I remembered myself when I was 14... and how, with its promise of love and romance, Valentine's day felt like the most magical day in the year.

Not being fourteen any longer and having been married for almost two decades, I have long since stopped looking forward to Valentine's day. We'd open a bottle of wine if it falls on a weekend, but more often than not, we barely acknowledge it. True, our lives have been ruled by HRH Lord Calendar for years, but we have surprisingly little respect for the actual date of a holiday. Birthday, anniversary, Christmas, Thanksgiving - these are all floating holidays to be celebrated when the time is right - aka when the calendars align.

I am a wife and a mother, so is it any wonder that my favorite holiday is Christmas - the time of collective madness when everyone around us is busy baking, decorating, planning, shopping and wrapping... and smiling... Christmas is the time when my husband's European bosses take holidays and there are no emails, work emergencies or teleconferences.... Christmas is the time when my teens become their sweet kiddo-selves and camp under the Christmas tree trying to guess what the gifts are. Christmas is the time when we eat our comfort food, bake tons of cookies and spend days doing the glorious nothing... Christmas is the holiday we start looking forward to in September and talk about all year round. In our family, Christmas is non-negotiable. But it doesn't need to be on the 24th.
