Journaling reads:
Question: What do you remember most about our family get togethers in Edisto, South Carolina?

Jim: Edisto was like going back in time. There was one grocery store, one restaurant and few shops. But there was fish boats pulling into port every morning and the guys made a trip there almost every day for fresh catch of the day and fresh shrimp.

Patsy: Then there was the farmers’ market with homemade pies and silver queen corn which is the sweetest and best corn we ever ate.

Question: So then your group did a lot of cooking?

Jim: Yes, it was a shared experience. Chief among the kitchen crew were Jill and Larry. Larry was our man of the grill who also knew how to make the very best grilled corn. He had a way of soaking in salt water for at least 20 minutes while still in the shuck and then putting it on the grill.

Patsy: He got the charcoal for the grill and heated it every night. Since this was a community of townhouse condos, the grills were limited and shared. We observed quickly that one of the neighbors waited for Larry to prepare and grill and then he ran out with his plate of meat to take advantage of the already ready grill. We all got a laugh at his antics.

Question: Were all nine people on board with the food choices?

Jim: No, daughter Lisa does not eat seafood and granddaughter Anna only wanted hot dogs but both dug right in and ate their share of corn and other veggies and dessert.

One morning Patsy & I wanted to go to a homey low country place that had take out foods and maybe 6 tables for seating. We had been there before and were going back for the shrimp and grits and invited the others to go with us.

Patsy: Son-in-law Larry said “yuck” to the grits but went anyway. Only Jim and I ordered the grits but gave Larry and Nathan a taste. Larry immediately called the waitress back and ordered some for himself. We had made a convert.

In the photo above you can see the oilcloth on the table, the bottles of hot sauce and catsup and the paper towel roll instead of napkins. Atmosphere courtesy of 1940’s and food prepared by two Gullah ladies who knew what they were doing.

Jim: we’d go back again and again!

      Great photos and story telling through your wonderful interview with Jim. I love going to places like that.. the old fashioned places with atmosphere instead of the franchise places. Beautiful elements and papers used to accent the photos.. I especially love the larger beach one that you are using as a backdrop behind the photos. Thanks for sharing, Patsy! :)

      Oh wow, this is stunning! I love the photos and the story. And I love how you scrapped it. I love that you've placed a large photo in the bottom and the smaller ones on top of it. So beautiful and creative. The two birds are a perfect finishing touch.

      Fabulous photos and such wonderful story telling, I loved reading this. Do you remember the sweetest children's show called Gullah Gullah Island? It was heavenly and my kids loved it. Anyway, your page is heavenly too. Makes me wish I was there.

      @djp332 - Neither DH or I can remember the name. It sits by a nursery on the road into Edisto proper (ha ha). It's an old house and they do wonderful southern goodies that you can get in sizes for your family -- like tomato pie. I think it's more a shop/food place than a restaurant. One of those quirky place that become a "discovery."
