@cookingmylife Mom had four brothers. The oldest was allowed to stay home, but three were in the war, and they all came out alive. Uncle Stan didn't see as much fighting as Uncle Ted. Uncle Ted was an infantryman. And then there was Uncle Richie. Info on them below:
Here's Uncle Stan's info from a layout I had created back in 2006:
6 Overseas Service Bars
1 Service Stripe
Good Conduct Medal
European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon
1 Bronze Star - Rhineland Campaign 15 Sep 1944 - 21 Mar 1945
Uncle Ted was in four battles, receiving four bronze stars:
Aleutian Islands - 6 Jun l942 - l5 Aug l943
Ardennes - Battle of the Bulge - l6-26 Dec l944
Rhineland - l5 Sep l944 - 2l Mar l945
Central Europe - 22 Mar l945 - ll May l945
Uncle Richie - my info on him is pretty sparse. He was the only one of the boys who married, and his discharge papers and medals went with him. UR's son (who I am in contact with) never shared any of that with me even though I've asked. He was in the army for six years, had at least two bronze stars (from a photo I have of him). He was promoted to a staff sergeant, also discovered from the patch on his sleeve in that photo.
@mcurtt My father was in the European Theater for the same last 3 battles your Uncle Ted was in. Never in the Aleutians but spent 42-43 in Tacoma WA and then somewhere in Texas. His are some of the VA records no longer available whether it was the fire or the flood in St. Louis I don't know.
