Always An Aunt ... but never a mom

Description
I had a photo I shot at a photography workshop that I wanted to play with but I didn't have a clear topic in mind. Over the next couple hours, this is what emerged - including some really raw journaling about the longing I have for the children I didn't think I wanted.

I ended up layering several different filters with various blending modes to create this final image. The bottom layer is Cutout, followed by Sumi-e and Cutout in a Luminosity blending mode, a desaturation layer, followed by a layer mixing Charcoal and Cutout in Subtract blending mode, and another layer of Charcoal and Cutout in Soft Light. I then added the painted paper with a Hard Light mode and Blend If set to everything except the solid black. Then I added the same painted paper with a 75% hard light blend set to Blend If only the solid black. (Confused yet?) Then came the diagonal stripe paper with a Linear Light blend at 18%, masked to not appear over the woman's image. Then I added another layer of the painted paper with a Screen blend, and created a faux drop-shadow on the woman's body.

The title was inspired by the old saying, "Always a bridesmaid, never a bride." It's composed of the painted paper with a Linear Light blend clipped to white text; the subtitle block is a paint smear clipped to a black rectangle. I created the paper strip quote by clipping the teal paper to rectangle shapes, adding a halftone style, rasterizing, adding the text with an engraved style, flattening, and applying a tape w/shadow style to finish.

Digital elements came the kit "Autumn Magic" by Valorie Wibbens. Title font is Impact, journaling is AmerType Medium. Styles from Mommyish include "Stylin' #165 - Halftone Styles", "Stylin' #61 - Tape", "Stylin' #81 - Engraved", and her shadow styles.
This is a stunning and creative page which is why it caught my eye and I clicked on it. It's so beautiful. And your journaling is so honest and powerful.

Wow...the entire layout is very powerful. Your journaling is raw. I'm so sorry for all the pain. :(

What an emotional page - it brought tears to my eyes. You've scrapped your pain in such a beautiful way. I hope it was therapeutic for you. I really don't have sufficient words, but I wanted to let you know that this page touched me on a deep level. Hugs to you <3

This is amazing. Your open, raw journaling really touched me. Thank you for sharing your story, along with the beauty of your page

I wish I had something better to say besides "I'm so sorry," but I don't. That must be so difficult, but you have taken that heartache and created a page that is painfully beautiful.

What a beautiful design! I love how you've described the techniques that you used. Your journaling is so heartfelt. Peace!

This page is so unique and creative. I love the photo and the effects and I think this page is such a wonderful way to express such personal, raw emotions. I'm so glad you were able to express your thoughts and emotions through this page and I am so happy you chose to share it. <3

This is so heartbreakingly beautiful. Thank you for your vulnerability. There are no words but to say I hear you and wish you grace as you walk this path.

Your journalling really resonates with me! Although I'm thankful that I don't experience any of the physical pain that you do- I'm also 34, backed out of my engagement a week before my wedding, an aunt but not yet a mother. My current boyfriend has three kids, but I'm so thankful that he definitely wants another.
My heart breaks for you, having to go through the heartbreak and longing every time you see what you will never have. Hold on to your faith and believe that God has plans for you that surpasses all of our expectations.

I can see that you were really able to express your feelings and hurt in this page!
