Alpargatas: {This is where Toms were Born}

The building, dating from 1883 when the company was created, is now abandoned (shame, is beautiful!) Journaling reads: These initially jute soled canvas footwear were called Alpargatas, which gave the name to the company once well established in 1885. The shoes, favored by laborers for their comfort, durability & low cost, were also favored by youth much later in the 70s and 80s as by then the soles were replaced by PVC. The company also created some of the most loved sports footwear in Argentina like Flecha & Pampero, grew with Factories in Uruguay in 1890, and by 1907 opened in Sao Paulo and developed also many other products in the textile and footwear industries. I'm not sure how they became "Toms", but obviously it had to be an Argentine national as their logo is the country's flag. What puzzles me is that these shoes are so expensive in the USA, whilst they are one of the cheapest options in Argentina! I had to add here that they were farmers shoes, or , as I said before, mainly laborers, meaning they were not a "cool" thing to buy... obviously the guy who converted into Toms had a good market vision! TFL!!!
