The main journal blurb says: We had to check out Alcatraz while in San Francisco. We decided to do an audio tour which was really cool because it was narrated by former inmates and guards at Alcatraz. We learned Alcatraz Island was chosen for its location because the water in San Francisco Bay was so choppy, anyone trying to escape would probably die before they made it to freedom. The craziest thing we learned about was an escape where 3 prisoners spent 6 months slowly digging through the wall in their cells using spoons and covering the holes with cardboard. On the night of their escape, they placed dummy heads on their pillows made out of soap, cement, hair and paint, then they crawled through the hole, up a utility corridor to the roof, and slid down an exterior pipe to freedom. We’ll never know if they actually made it across the bay, or if they drowned.
