My mother is one of the strongest women I know. She has been a shining example of perseverance, steadfastness, loyalty, kindness, generosity, and so many other virtues. She is now in her 80's.
She has devoted her life to helping others.
In her 40's and 50's she was the director for a woman's shelter and during that time she helped a young mother retrieve her daughter from the war in Bosnia. For this effort she was awarded the Governor General's Award of Canada and made front page news in the Montreal Gazette. When she moved to the Atlantic provinces,
she continued to help immigrants settle in Canada, aiding with finding and furnishing apartments, getting jobs, doing complicated paperwork, all as a volunteer! Last year she was awarded the Humanitarian Aid award from a local charity organization. I have learned so much from her actions, her heart position, her attitudes and her selfless ambitions. This is what I will cherish and want to pass on.
I recognize that I have been blessed to have such an amazing mother and I strive to be that strong for my own children as well. Let us recognize the mothers that came before us, the sacrifices they made for our
well-being, the virtues they instilled in us, the heritage they left behind, and the continued responsibility towards the next generations, that rests on our shoulders. This is not meant to be a burden, but an honor.
