I'm such a nerd! Lol! But, I really love my 3D printer so much! Ha ha! I've gotten my son hooked now too! Yay!

Journaling: I bought my 3D printer with my Christmas money in January 2024. I’ve used it a ton to make all kinds of random items to use around the house and for my craft projects. I’m lucky that I can actually use my CAD software from work to design my own tools and parts, but one thing I didn’t know how to do was add supports for anything that had shapes that overhang the layers below them. Everything needs a layer below it to build upon. I knew that supports was the term for what I needed, but I hadn’t investigated it yet. Wyatt and I worked together to print a few items for his Dungeons and Dragons collection, but the more intricate models always gave a warning about needing supports. One weekend Wyatt found a model for a “Beholder” that he really wanted to print, so I finally took the time to research about supports. I watched a couple of great YouTube videos and learned about all the different types of supports. I opened the model in my software and realized I didn’t have those options. I did a quick check to see if I had the latest version of the software and realized mine was really old. I did a quick update and then I had all kinds of options! Yahoo! I used Organic Tree supports for his first character and excitedly watched it print. The supports get smaller the closer they get to the attachment point and then barely touch so they are easy to break off after printing. I was SO excited after the first successful print. Wyatt loved his Beholder and even asked for some paint and a tiny paintbrush so he could paint the eyes and mouth. After that he learned to do it all on his own and is having a blast printing characters for Dnd!

oh wow - those are some scary dudes! DH & DS use the 3D printerS here a few times a week (yes, we have 2, i'm not sure why he needed a bigger better one but theres a rainbow of filament spools for every purpose all over the office; i know i bought some kind of textured PEI base plates or something at xmas for one of the bambu machines after he showed me a video of shiny bookmarks on youtube) but those warnings and the humidity and sometimes it not sticking to the plate can be annoying and the support waste seems crazy to me sometimes, but anyway i'm glad you found some good projects and in case you are the kind to actually print pages you typo'd 'videos' as 'vidoes' in the top left block.

What a fun hobby to share with your son! I have not delved into this realm, but it sure sounds fascinating! Great documentation! My son's really into DnD, maybe he needs a 3D printer!

@bellbird It's so funny, but as I was creating this page and posting it, I thought of you and almost tagged you because I know your DH had one (I didn't know it was 2! - that's awesome... hee hee!) and that you mentioned having all the spools too. We have quite a collection of filament spools now too. Whoops. I have the texture PEI plate too and even that sometimes has trouble with stuff not sticking... so if you husband has that trouble, tell him that spreading glue stick on the plate is a MIRACLE! So cheap and easy and it works better than anything else I've tried. Like it's the best tip I've learned so far!

@scrapchyck It's really so fun once you learn how to use it! I also just made myself a whole set of drawers to store my paint markers horizontally and I was able to make them to fit in the shelf space I had which is so fun.

I should have said feel free to tag me on your 3d printer pages too (DH apparently knew about the ?Elmer's glue hack but thnx), I'll have to send U a pic of the office 3d printer spools area on messenger, it's a feat of engineering in itself!

What a cool hobby! So neat that you got to share this with Wyatt! Love the D&D creation, so fun! And love the journaling, great storytelling. Fantastic page!
