journaling: On the night of January 15, 1968, Gibellina was completely destroyed by a major earthquake. The new Gibellina, Gibellina nuova, was founded a few kilometers away and a gigantic work of art, the Cretto di Burri, was created on the site of the destroyed town. Large concrete blocks now show where the houses once stood. When you visit this memorial and see the ruins of some of the homes nearby, you can only imagine the devastation the earthquake had caused.
