The Valley of the Temples - one of the most famous sights in Sicily.
The remains of the ancient Greek city of Akragas lie on a plateau above the sea.
The archaeological site is extensive and consists of two parts. The part with the Temple of Castor and Pollux is rather disappointing: a mess of stones...
The other side of the excavations, however, makes up for it. Beautiful temples, quite well preserved, rise against a nice landscape.
The highlight is the Concordia Temple (500 BC) – a temple dedicated to the goddess of unity that has stood the test of time thanks to being converted into a Christian church as early as the 6th century. With its 34 columns and triangular tympanum, it is one of the best-preserved buildings of Greek antiquity and the pinnacle of Doric architecture.
