journaling with American Typewriter:
Heather had been sick so we almost
didn’t get to walk together on the first
day of 2026. We met at Lake Anna
State Park at 7:00 a.m., just in time to see the 7:27a.m. sunrise.
Virginia State Parks have an awesome program in which they
open as early as 5:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day for First Hike.
Lake Anna was not as busy as Leesylvania, where we
hiked January 1, 2025. We didn’t see anyone else
until the end of our hike. It was a little disappointing not getting
to see the sun rise over the water like it does elsewhere. The
trail doesn’t go close enough and the water isn’t wide
enough. But it was a very good hike; at least, as much
as cold, brown winter hikes can be. It feels good to start the
year with such an important things as exercise,
fresh air, community, and being
in touch with nature.
