Journaling reads:
My maternal grandparents bought this home new in the early 1920’s and moved in with their family of five. After Mom & Dad were married in 1942, my parents moved upstairs & began raising us three kids. Looking for photos of the front of the building, I have so few, but 100’s of snapshots of us in the backyard, grandparents, parents, uncles, visiting relatives, two brothers and me. It was more important to celebrate the love and milestones in that cosy backyard on Cortez Street, shared with my grandmother’s pet rooster. And there were flowers, so many flowers.
The snapshots represented:
1936 - My grandfather posing, a privet hedge in the front.
1943 - my future Mom with a three-star banner, three brothers serving in the war, the hedges are lush, flowers plentiful.
1946 - Mom with my oldest brother and my grandparents, propped up against the cement pillars and sitting on the wooden railing.
1971 - me and my friend Cindy, soon to be HS graduates, we now have a remodeled front with wrought iron railings and a new brick facade.
A few months after this last photo was taken, I left for university, and then only visited. People left home, people passed on. In 1987 the only ones living here were my Mom, my brother Joe, my uncle Ted. They sold the home and moved to a new location, the end of an era.
How wonderful that you have all these photos and you have labelled them well with some nice journaling. That rooster in the back yard was a fun fact too. Lovely layout.
How amazing to have a family home like that. I've moved around so much I can't even imagine what it's like, and how much of a wrench it must have been when it was sold. Such an incredible page to document this
