Bernie Saunders, US Senator from Vermont, made a hit at President Biden's inauguration. He wore handmade mittens & a puffy coat trying to stay warm in the cold of Washington DC.
Bernie's mittens were made by Jen Ellis, a Vermont elementary school teacher who has a side business making mittens out of recycled wool. His puffy jacket was made by Burton Snowboards.
The image of Bernie was used to make a variety of merchandise on Bernie's website, including T-shirts, sweatshirts & stickers. The first & second runs sold out quickly and have raised over $1.8 million for Vermont charities.
Jen Ellis made 3 more pair of mittens & donated them for fundraising auctions on eBay to support Passion 4 Paws Vermont, Outright Vermont, & her daughter’s college fund; over $10,000 was raised.
Sanders' attire has also sparked other charitable endeavors. An auction of a crocheted doll of Sanders raised $20,000 & Burton Snowboards donated 50 jackets to the Burlington Department for Children & Families in Sanders’ name, his office said.
