The background story: years and years ago, back in Iowa, Nicole made last-minute plans to fly home and wanted to surprise Dave with her presence. I was talking to my friend, Dot Logan, about Nicole’s plans, and we concocted a plan to get Dave to the airport late that night for the surprise. That evening, Dot called our house and asked for our assistance. She related to Dave that her brother, Donald Dutcher, was arriving at the Des Moines airport late that night and she was unable to pick him up. She asked us to fetch him. I have forgotten the reason we fabricated for her inability to get him. So, I made a Donald Dutcher sign for Dave to hold up at the gate and off we went to Des Moines. This was back in the nineties when you could still go directly to the gate. We stood at the gate, Dave holding the DONALD DUTCHER sign, waiting for him to arrive when along comes Nicole. Dave was looking around her trying to spot Donald and finally noticed Nicole. Dave said, “What are you doing here?” He promptly pushed her gently to the side as he continued to scan the crowd for the non-existent, Donald Dutcher!
When we arrived at the Phoenix airport, Nicole was standing at our gate (having arrived earlier) holding a DONALD DUTCHER sign.
It was a great start to a fun vacation.
