Prince Charles and Lady Diana’ s wedding. All England was in celebration mode for this wedding while we were visiting old friends up in Yorkshire.Their village of Ripley was having a big fete and there was a dress- up contest for the children. Our friends’ 14 year old daughter dressed up like a carrot. I’d never seen anything like it in my life and thought it was a really clever costume! But then we were off to a summer in the US and the carrot costume was forgotten.

Halloween, Bahrain
Here we were in another country and once again costumes were required for a party. I had lived so many years without the celebration of ‘normal’ US holidays that I was stumped as to what to wear. But aha! I remembered the carrot costume and fiddled with some fabric to wrap myself up. I looked more like an orange mummy but a costume it was, albeit one that was very very difficult to move in.
Summer 1986
While on my way back to the US, alone this time, I visited my friends again. They were now in different houses and divorcing, My husband and I were also divorcing. It took Charles and Diana 2 more years to separate and 4 more to actually divorce. Maybe there was a carrot costume in their story too! So...was it the carrot outfit for us? I don’t know but I’ll never wear one like that again, that’s for sure. I don’t want another divorce, carrot or not!

Amazing storytelling! The carrot caught my attention right away, and I really loved reading the story behind the costume! Also -- how awesome that you have these photos!
